Lead Teacher for Communication, Downs View Special School and Colleges

 

Ashlie is currently Lead Teacher for Communication at Downs View Special School & Colleges. She is a Key Stage 1/2 teacher, with a specialism in Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), but has previously worked across the 4-19 age range. She also has experience of working with children with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, Moderate Learning Difficulties, and Multisensory Impairments (DeafBlind pupils). She has a keen interest in research and development, and has both PGCSE and M.Ed qualifications with a focus on SLD/ASC.

Ashlie provides regular training on ASC and specialist communication strategies for pupils with learning difficulties and/or autism, and has previously worked as an SLE in Hampshire. As a member of the school Outreach Team, she is involved in a range of work in mainstream schools to support specific pupils, facilitate staff development, and develop appropriate curriculums.

Ashlie is available to provide:

  • Bespoke intervention packages for individual pupils with moderate to severe learning difficulties and autism
  • Tailored support and guidance for staff to develop sustainable, effective practice for teaching pupils with autism and/or SLD; including help with target-setting, planning, managing challenging behaviour, and developing early communication
  • Specialist support and advice for staff in using a total communication approach to support pupils, including an in-depth knowledge of specialist communication strategies such as PECS, Attention Autism, and Intensive Interaction
  • Advice and support on adapting the learning environment to support students with learning difficulties and/or ASC, including implementing the TEACCH approach
  • Formal training packages for staff in relation to Autism and Severe Learning Difficulties.
